Gail Somerville Evans was taken out of the house she loved, her long-time home in Florence, Alabama, on Thursday, July 24, 2025, at the age of 82.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Betty Ruth and Dwight Grover Somerville, her oldest son, John Gregory Evans, and her sister, Carol Somerville Pilgrim.

She is survived by her husband, John Douglas Evans, son Douglas Somerville Evans, his wife, Heidi Bartlett Evans, and three grandsons.

Gail was born and raised in Tuscumbia, Alabama, and a proud graduate of the Deshler High School Class of 1961. She was a graduate of Auburn University, Class of 1965, where she majored in home economics and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. She was a member of the Florence Service League and a deacon at First Christian Church, Florence, Alabama. She was an accomplished seamstress, hostess, and cook. She loved hosting events, especially the Lelia Street 4th of July event, where she opened her property to the entire neighborhood with her husband, Doug. She worked a number of years in the office at Coffee High School, which both her boys attended.

Gail made friends wherever she went. She kept in contact with parents of her sons' friends who she met at college get-togethers and stayed loyal to her friends, including her friends and colleagues in both high school and college.

What a loss she is to all who knew her.

Visitation will be Tuesday, July 29, 2025, 10-11 AM at 1st Christian Church Florence and memorial service will follow with Rev. Pat Parvin officiating. Elkins Funeral Home is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome donations in favor of Alabama Hospice of the Shoals or First Christian Church of Florence.

Knew Gail and David Wells when I attended Central Baptist Church in Florence. Gail was a very kind and gracious person who always never met a stranger. She will be greatly missed by all. Prayers and sympathy to her family. Marjorie Mance Cole.
