Gail A. Maitland, 74, long known for her compassionate spirit, kindness and the joy she so effortlessly brought to others, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025.
Gail leaves behind her husband of 49 years, Dr. David Maitland; her children, Jason Maitland and his wife Sarah of San Diego, and Jennifer Hyde and her husband David of Littleton and her cherished grandchildren, Jameson, Sterling, Mia and Layla.
Gail also leaves her brother, Robert Talenda and his wife Christine of Uniontown, Ohio, as well as several loving nieces and nephews. Gail was predeceased by her parents and by her younger brother, Mitchell J. Talenda, Jr.
Gail was born and raised in Hartford, CT. and graduated from Saint Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in 1971. She subsequently completed a BSN program and later a Masters Degree from Anna Maria College. She began her nursing career in the Surgical Service at Yale-New Haven Hospital before relocating to Massachusetts with her husband in 1976. There, she embarked on what would become a nearly 40-year career at what is now known as UMass - Memorial Medical Center's University Campus. Throughout her tenure, Gail received numerous awards recognizing her Excellence in Nursing and Outstanding Performance.
Following her retirement in 2016, Gail continued to give back by volunteering as a driver for the American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery Program, transporting patients to cancer-related medical appointments.
Throughout her life, Gail was a talented, enthusiastic, and energetic sportswoman. She was an avid golfer, tennis player, senior soccer player, skier, and triathlete. She loved the beach and cherished many happy family vacations along the Connecticut seashore.
Above all, her favorite pastime was spending time with the family she loved deeply-especially her children and grandchildren, with whom she was affectionately known as Mom, Ma, Mims, Gramma, and Amma.
A Memorial Service and Celebration will be arranged at the family's convenience. The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Gail's memory may be made to:
The Alzheimer's Association: https://www.alz.org or to Notre Dame Hospice: www.notredamehealthcare.org.
Arrangements are under the care of Hays Funeral Home, 56 Main Street, Northborough. To leave a condolence to Gail's family, please visit www.HaysFuneralHome.com.
