With full hearts and deep love, we celebrate the life of Gail Morris McInerney, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 16th, with her daughter by her side. She was 78 years young, and her light will continue to shine in all who knew her.
Born in Wilmington, Delaware on April 12, 1947, to the late Joseph Morris and Louise Rutherford, Gail graduated from Dickinson High School in the Class of 1965. It was there she began forming the strong, kind, and fiercely loyal spirit that defined her life. Her radiant smile lit up every room, and her warmth, humor, and compassion made her unforgettable. She was grateful to maintain lifelong friendships from those early days-bonds that stayed strong, even as her health declined.
Gail spent many years as a Human Resources assistant at James River/Printpack, where she was affectionately known as the "Work Mom," "Best Friend," and "True Encourager." She was the heart of the workplace-always listening, lifting others up, and offering guidance with grace and generosity. She made people feel heard, valued, and loved.
But above all else, Gail's greatest joy was her family. Being a Mom and Granmom wasn't just her role-it was her calling. Together with her late husband, William McInerney, Sr., she raised four children with unwavering love and strength. Her home was more than a house-it was a place of warmth, laughter, and unconditional support. She created a space where everyone felt welcome and safe.
Her happiest moments were spent with her family, especially cheering from the sidelines at her grandchildren's sporting events, school programs, and milestones. She was their biggest fan-always proud, always glowing with joy. A passionate Philadelphia sports fan, Gail never missed a chance to cheer on the Phillies or Eagles, often with spirited sass and full-throated enthusiasm.
In addition to her husband, Gail was predeceased by her cherished son, Steve Alexander, Sr. She is survived by her loving children: Matt Alexander, Sr. (Angie), Billy McInerney, Jr., and Shannon Nardo (Mike); her treasured grandchildren: Stephen Alexander, Jr. (Raychel), Erika Cuomo (Sam), Matthew Alexander, Jr. (Katie), and Gabriella Nardo; and her adored great-grandchildren: Vincent, Lia, Mila, and Marleigh. She also leaves behind her two dearest friends, Susan Damico and Pat Sterling, whose decades of love and loyalty meant the world to her. In addition, she is survived by a brother, Gary Morris (Doreen) and a host of nieces and nephews.
In recent years, Gail faced the challenges of dementia with remarkable courage, grace, and her signature humor. Even as the illness progressed, her beautiful spirit never dimmed. Her smile continued to brighten our days, her wit made us laugh, and her love reminded us of what true strength looks like.
She will forever be remembered for the joy she brought into the world-her laughter, her loyalty, her fierce love, and her deep empathy. She made people feel truly seen and unconditionally loved. Her legacy lives on in every warm memory, every life she touched, and every heart that carries her forward.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at Vero at Newark for their compassionate care of Gail over the past year and a half. Your kindness and support brought comfort and peace to her final chapter.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 pm until 6 pm on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place,
Newark, DE, where a celebration of Gail's extraordinary life will begin at 6 pm, where we will come together to honor her beautiful spirit and the unforgettable impact she had on all of us.
