Galen M Carlile, 80, of Turner, Oregon passed away January 2, 2025. He resided in
Bend, Oregon at Mill View Memory Care with his wife, Marjorie, (Margie), since July of 2022. Galen passed away peacefully with his devoted and loving daughter, Lisa Castro, at his side.
Galen was born January 4, 1944 in Portland, Oregon. He graduated from Cascade Union High School in Turner, Oregon in 1962 and received his Master's Degree in Teaching from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon. Galen taught high school physics and chemistry both in Oregon and Utah. He was a celebrated cross country as well as track and field coach for 50 years! The Oregon Athletic Coaches Association (OACA) honored Galen and he was inducted into the Neah-Kah-Nie High School Hall of Fame in December 2018.
Galen and Margie were married and sealed in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple on March 19, 1973. He opened his heart to her four children: Matthew, Tracee, Lisa and Jana, becoming their bonus Dad. Their family grew from four children to 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Galen served faithfully in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. While at OSU, he was active in the LDS Student Association. In addition, Elder Carlile served as a full-time missionary in the LDS East Central States Mission from 1965-1967. Galen also served as the Branch President of the Rockaway Beach Branch of the LDS Church for several years. Both Margie and Galen served together as Church Service Missionaries in the Salem, Oregon Employment Resource Center from September 1, 2012, through March 1, 2013.
He enjoyed gardening, music, family history, his telescope, a good piece of pie, and all of he and Margie's fur babies! He is survived by his wife, Margie; his brother and sister-in-law, Jason and Pam Carlile and their family; his son, Matthew Herlitz; his daughters and son-in-laws, Tracee and Randy Loosle, Lisa and Oscar Castro; his daughter, Jana Herlitz, and 12 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Memorial Service for Galen will be held on Saturday, January 11, 2025 at 11 am Pacific Time at the LDS High Desert Ward, located at 60800 Tekampe Road,
Bend, Oregon 97702. At Galen's request, there will be a "picnic lunch" following the service at the Church graciously provided by the High Desert Ward Relief Society. Bend, Oregon and the grave will be dedicated by Galen's younger brother, Jason Carlile.
