He Graduated from Newfane Central High School in June 1975 and then attended Clarkson University for 3 years.
In his youth, Gary spent many years at YMCA's Camp Kenan both as a Camper and then Counselor under the supervision and Friendship of the "Old Gray Goose", Robert Gray. Who was a YMCA Legend in Niagara County. Gary was so intrigued by him and his philosophies.
After 3 years at Clarkson Gary decided to take a little break and hitchhike across the country. He crossed America several times walking and riding his Recumbent bicycle. Working at Americas National Parks during tourist season. Usually as a Waiter in the Parks Restaurants and Baggage Handler at the Resorts. Grand Teton, Denali, Mesa Verde and Brian Head to name a few. He would work the season, plan a Trip and then travel on the Off Season.
Then he decided to go and Travel the World, perhaps inspired by the movie "Forrest Gump" He became Gary "Walkingman" Hause, "Walking the World, One Continent at a Time". With a cart to hold his belongings fashioned from a Rugged All Terrain Baby Stroller. He had many adventures and travelled parts of South America, New Zealand, Australia, Europe and Great Britian logging over 27 thousand miles by foot!
Usually, he would walk 25-27 miles a day then pick a quiet place along the road and camp for the night. He met a multitude of wonderful people along the way and had many stories to tell!
When he occasionally stopped back in at Newfane for short visits Gary would give talks to local groups. Scouts, Seniors, School kids. All were thrilled to hear of his adventures! Gary Loved what he did!
Over the years he even fit in some time Hang Gliding and Sailing. All those adventures!
He married Denise Bartlett Boldin in April of 2012 on the Bank of Lake Powell in Page, AZ. Where he finally settled down working at the Resort there. For a while
In December of 2013 another story began. Gary was planning another walk to
South America. During a physical the Doctor found he had an Aortic Aneurysm. Surgery was done and when he woke up, they found he'd had a stroke. Recovery was going well but during the next year he had 4 more strokes 5 strokes total! The results from all that trauma were Aphasia, trouble verbally communicating. No cure, no reversal. Just horrible Aphasia. He looked fine and healthy, but he struggled to put the thoughts in his brain into words. Communication was difficult. Also, concentration was affected. He couldn't read without difficulty or make conversation. Very sad. No humor either.
So, for the past 12 years that has been his life. Still walking, but only in town and walking the dogs. Still riding his bike. Barely reading and almost never using the phone.
On May 18th, he fell off his bike and cracked his head on the pavement. The one day he didn't wear a helmet! It has been downhill from there. Hospital stays in ICU and continued stay due to an infection.
We, the Hause family would like to Thank Denise for Her Love and Care of Gary. You get High praise from us!
Also, St. George Intermountain Hospital in St. George, UT and Autumn Park Assisted Living and Memory Care in Washington, UT for their Wonderful Care and Expertise during Gary's stay there.
