Gary Helmers Obituary

A private family graveside service for Gary L. Helmers, 67, of rural Sherburn, MN, will be held in Lake Fremont Cemetery in Dunnell, MN. A time for remembering and celebrating Gary's life will be held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Lake Belt Bar and Grill in Ceylon, MN. Gary passed away peacefully with Denise by his side on Sunday, June 22, 2025, at the Mayo Clinic Health Systems in St. James, MN. The Kramer Family Funeral Home of Trimont, Sherburn, and Welcome, MN, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Gary L. Helmers was born on March 26, 1958, in Estherville, IA, the son of Robert D. and Leanna D. (Simacek) Helmers. Gary grew up near Sherburn, MN, where he attended school and graduated from Sherburn High School.
Gary was united in marriage to Sharon Janssen and the couple was blessed with a son, Brian.
Gary loved life on the farm and was fascinated by the equipment used to plant, harvest and tend to the land. Gary also worked as a rural mail carrier for over 20 years and found his greatest joy working as an auctioneer where he met and made countless friends through the years.
In his youth, Gary enjoyed attending dirt track races and even took his turn behind the wheel. His love for the dirt track was passed down to his son Brian and the pair looked forward to summer nights together at the track cheering on their favorite driver. Gary was an avid Minnesota sports fan enjoying the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat! His passion for machinery was evident when you pulled onto the farm as he took great pride in finding deals and later selling his finds.
Roughly 10 years ago, Gary met Denise Hoffman and they soon purchased Double H Farm and started their life together. Where one was, the other was often close behind as they were always together. Another constant in Gary's life was his dog, "Oliver".
Left to cherish his memory is his fiancé, Denise Hoffman; siblings, Debra Johnson, Dennis (Connie) Helmers, Michael (Sharon) Helmers, Alan Helmers (fiancé, Charlene Somnis), and Terry (Becky) Helmers; Denise's children, Chad (Tammy) Ayers and Dustin (Ashley) Moffitt; Denise's 6 grandchildren whom he loved greatly; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Leanna Helmers; son, Brian Helmers; brother-in-law, Doug Johnson; and sister-in-law, Lola Helmers.
