Gary B. Randolph, age 73, of Marion, IL passed away peacefully, with his family by his side, at 8:50 p.m. on Tuesday, February 25, 2025 at his home.
He was born in Carbondale, IL on May 19, 1951 the son of Henry "Hank" and Marguerite (Benard) Randolph.
Gary attended school in Marion and was a graduate of Marion High School Class of 1969. Several years later he received his Associate Degree from John A. Logan College of Carterville, IL and took several courses at Southern Illinois University of Carbondale, IL.
He was united in marriage to Dorothy Kay Darnell and this union was blessed with 2 children, Dustin Lee and Monica LeAnn.
Gary's working career began at Amax's Delta Mine, east of Marion, as their Warehouse Manager and Para-Medic for about 10 years until the mine closed. He then went to work for about 5 years for Old Ben No. 25 Mine east of West Frankfort, IL as their Ware House Manager and Para-Medic until that mine closed. He then began working for the City of Marion beginning with the city cemetery and later transferred to the street department for a total of about 10 years until he got disabled. He applied and was approved for his Federal Firearms License and had great knowledge about firearms. He worked for about 14 years for Dunn's Sporting Goods of Marion in their firearms department up until the time of his death.
He was a member of Grange Hall Free Will Baptist Church of Marion and the Harrisburg Hunters Club of Carrier Mills, IL.
He loved the outdoors and in his spare time when he was younger fishing especially at Cedar Lake, south of Carbondale, IL, where he caught many bluegills, bass and crappie. His love was chasing waterfowl and spent many days during the season guiding at Bush's and Burn's Hunting Club on the south side of Crab Orchard Refuge and hunting in Arkansas. He also enjoyed shell reloading and trap shooting twice a week and poker playing at the gun club and shooting in 22 rifle tournaments. He was a people person and enjoyed visiting, creating friendships and helping everyone that came into Dunn's Sporting Goods over the years. He had abundant knowledge about all types of guns, but his Browning's, Remington's and Winchester's were the special brands to him.
The most important part of his life was spending time with his grandson, Remington. Together they shared much of their time and created many memories. The wide variety of knowledge and time given to Remington by Gary will now continue into the future.
He is survived by his grandson, Remington T. Randolph of Marion; son, Dustin L. Randolph of Peoria, IL, other extended family and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Monica Randolph and sister, Georgia Marcum.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 North Court Street, Marion, IL.
The time of visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
Following the visitation, the funeral service will be at 3:00 p.m. with Pastor Kevin McNeely, minister of the Grange Hall Free Will Baptist Church of Marion presiding.
