Cumberland, MD- George Frederick "Fred" Smiley, 82, of Cumberland, MD passed away at UPMC-Western Maryland on Saturday, July 12, 2025.
Born January 1, 1943 in Cumberland, MD, Fred was the son of the late Adelbert Leydig Smiley and Gertrude " June" (Forster) Smiley. He is survived by estranged wife: Jean O'Brien; two sons: Brett M. Smiley and wife Velvet, Hillsdale, MI; and Jeff Smiley, Cumberland, MD; two sisters: Nancy Hartman (Bill), Cumberland, MD; and Norma Markley (Galen), Short Gap, WV; three nieces: Candi McNamara, Misty Lindsey, and Krista Jones; and a nephew: Johnny Markley.
Fred was a 1960 Graduate of Mt. Savage High School. He served in the United States Army for 3 years and started his work career as a sheet metal worker for Ray C. Lapp. He later worked and retired from the Railroad as a boilermaker.
Fred was a member of Zion United Church of Christ. He also belonged to the Antique Car Club, Model Trains Association and was an avid fan of NASCAR racing.
Friends will be received at Adams Family Funeral Home, P.A., 404 Decatur Street, Cumberland, MD (www.adamsfamilyfuneralhome.com) on Monday, July 21, 2025 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. A funeral service will begin at 12:00 P.M. with Chaplain Paul Demers officiating.
Interment will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.
Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by the Post #13 Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his name to the Allegany County Animal Shelter, P. O. Box 566, Cumberland, MD 21501-0566 or a charity of choice.
