Gilbert L. Stecker, age 92, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, at Van Buren County Hospital, with his loving family by his side. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gilbert will be remembered for his strong work ethic, quiet wisdom, and remarkable ability to build and repair anything.
Born to John and Nellie (Meyers) Stecker, Gilbert grew up in Iowa and graduated from Bonaparte High School before proudly serving in the U.S. Air Force. While stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he met Merial-the love of his life. They married and returned to Iowa after his service, where Gilbert joined the family farming business and raised four children.
After twelve years of farming, the family moved back to Albuquerque, where Gilbert launched a successful heating and cooling business. He and Merial also enjoyed remodeling and flipping homes, combining their skills and shared vision. Upon retirement, they returned to Iowa, and Gilbert continued working for Ace Hardware for many years.
In retirement, Gilbert and Merial spent winters in Texas, where they embraced the warm climate and friendships that blossomed there. Together, they explored 49 states side by side, making countless memories along the way.
Gilbert was a master woodworker with a lifelong passion for craftsmanship. Known for his steady presence and resourcefulness, he enriched the lives of everyone around him through quiet acts of generosity and support.
