Gilbert L. Stecker, age 92, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2025, at Van Buren County Hospital, with his loving family by his side. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gilbert will be remembered for his strong work ethic, quiet wisdom, and remarkable ability to build and repair anything.
Born to John and Nellie (Meyers) Stecker, Gilbert grew up in Iowa and graduated from Bonaparte High School before proudly serving in the U.S. Air Force. While stationed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he met Merial-the love of his life. They married and returned to Iowa after his service, where Gilbert joined the family farming business and raised four children.
After twelve years of farming, the family moved back to Albuquerque, where Gilbert launched a successful heating and cooling business. He and Merial also enjoyed remodeling and flipping homes, combining their skills and shared vision. Upon retirement, they returned to Iowa, and Gilbert continued working for Ace Hardware for many years.
In retirement, Gilbert and Merial spent winters in Texas, where they embraced the warm climate and friendships that blossomed there. Together, they explored 49 states side by side, making countless memories along the way.
Gilbert was a master woodworker with a lifelong passion for craftsmanship. Known for his steady presence and resourcefulness, he enriched the lives of everyone around him through quiet acts of generosity and support.
Gilbert is survived by his beloved wife, Merial; daughters Denise (Chuck) Carlson and Tamara (Rick) Lucero; son Eric (Amy) Stecker; and sister Irma Elliott. His legacy continues through grandchildren Tara (BJ) Simmons, Breanne (Matt) McEntee, Michael (Andi) Breech, Shane (Hadley) DeFraia, Philip (Haylee) Stecker, and Levi Lucero; great-grandchildren Ryder Simmons, MaColie and Brinley McEntee, Brandon, Tyler and Gavyn Breech, Emilia and Zeke DeFraia, Haiden and Ezra Stecker. He also leaves behind step-grandchildren Molly Pilcher, Denae Moyle, Dustin Gonterman, Travis Gonterman, and Brandon Kramer, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Gilbert shared a lasting friendship with George Feezor, a close companion throughout many chapters of life. Their bond, built over decades of shared experiences and mutual respect, was a meaningful part of Gilbert's journey.
He was preceded in death by his son Marty Stecker; grandson Kyle Breech; parents John and Nellie Stecker; brothers Lester and Dean Stecker; and sisters Rhea Brombaugh and Neva Carter.
Gilbert's life was marked by devotion, craftsmanship, and an abiding love for his family. He leaves behind a legacy of integrity, kindness, and the quiet strength of a life well lived.
In accordance with his wishes, Gilbert will be cremated, and a private family memorial will be held at a later date. Condolences may be mailed to: 832 Country Lane Road, Keosauqua, IA 52565. We invite you to share your memories and upload photos of Gilbert onto the memorial page at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com. Your tributes will serve as a comforting reminder of the beautiful life he lived.
