Gladys Lee Scott Way Obituary

Gladys Lee Scott Way, 91, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on July 3, 2025. Born in Wilson County on August 3, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Robert Lee Scott and Ellie Mae Boykin Scott.
In addition to her parents, Gladys is preceded in death by her brothers, Willie Scott, Elmer Scott, and James Scott; and sisters, Virginia Scott, Betty Batten, Doris Eason, and Lois Smith.
Gladys is survived by her loving husband, George Way; children, Carolyn R. Brown and husband, Scott, and Dennis Etheridge and wife, Patsy; and grandson, Spencer Etheridge.
Gladys dedicated 36 years of her life to civil service, working tirelessly and with integrity to support others. Her commitment to her work was only matched by her many talents outside of the office. A remarkably skilled seamstress with an eye for detail, she could bring fabric to life with just a needle and thread. Whether it was a garment, a handmade gift, or a thoughtful repair, her handiwork always carried her warmth and care.
Her creativity didn't stop at sewing. Gladys had a knack for refinishing furniture, breathing new life into worn pieces and transforming them into something beautiful and useful again. Her knowledge in these crafts was vast, and she generously shared her wisdom with others, always ready with a helpful tip or kind encouragement.
Gladys also had a deep love for her community. She gave her time generously, including volunteering with Meals on Wheels, where she not only delivered meals but shared moments of kindness and conversation that meant so much to those she served.
One of her greatest joys was being near the water. The beach was her happy place-where she felt most at peace, walking along the shore and collecting shells with the same keen eye that made her such a gifted artisan.
Gladys will be remembered for her generosity, her creative spirit, and her gentle strength. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched, the community she helped build, and the beauty she left behind in both people and things.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Kenly Funeral Service. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest memorials be sent to Hospice of Wilson 1901 Tarboro St SW #301, Wilson, NC 27893 in memory of Gladys.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Kenly Funeral Service.
