Gracie Louise Johnson was born December 20, 2024 at Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls, SD, to Nick and Emily Johnson. She was born prematurely at 23 weeks gestation weighing 1lb 5oz. Gracie passed away peacefully in the arms of her loving parents on July 5, 2025 due to post surgery complications at Childrens Nebraska in Omaha, NE.
A private service will be held on Friday, July 11, 2025 at the Congregational Church UCC in Columbia, SD.
Though her time with us was brief, Gracie showed a strength and courage far beyond her tiny frame, spending every moment of her life in the NICU. Gracie faced every challenge with bravery and a fierce attitude that inspired everyone who had the privilege to know her. Her sweet eyes, long eyelashes, button nose and fighting spirit touched the hearts of all of her family, nurses, doctors and medical care team. In those six and a half months, Gracie taught us more about love, patience, hope, resilience, and strength than most could ever in a lifetime.
Though her journey was a difficult one, it was filled with countless tender moments of singing gentle lullabies, whispered prayers, lots of smooches, and the warmth of being cradled in loving arms. She was an avid fan of butt and belly pats, having mom and dad hold her pacifier for her, and had perfected the art of giving side eye and eye rolls. Gracie only knew love and was never alone.
She is survived by her parents, Nick and Emily (Meyer) Johnson; maternal grandparents, Tom and Kris Meyer; paternal grandparents, Paul and Kristi Eckrich, Alan Johnson; maternal great grandpa, Robert Meyer; paternal great grandpa, Donald Kurtz; paternal great grandma, Janice Johnson; uncle Jake (Carly) Meyer; uncle Lane (Rebecca) Meyer; aunt Alyssa Meyer; uncle Landon Johnson; uncle Jeremy Johnson; aunt Kayla (Corey) Willis; and many cousins.
Gracie is being held in heaven by her great grandparents, Roger and Maxine Larson, Bonnie Meyer, Dixie Kurtz, and Ralph (Dean) Johnson.
