I didn't see Gray often, but I was always fascinated to have a 1st cousin the same age as my dad. Kind of just how it is when your dad was the youngest of 7 kids and a "late life surprise" as that. I always thought Gray was awesome. Probably because, when we visited in my childhood, he owned a parrot. I found that fascinating. He always seemed very kind and I know those who were close to him are mourning. I know Dad, his siblings, and those of our generation of the Walters family that have gone before were there to greet him. I'm sure it was as great as the family reunions we used to have.

I just learned about Gray's passing a few minutes ago. It's 3:00 p.m. now and the funeral is probably done. I am so disappointed that I'm not there to share my memories and honor him in person.
I'll never forget the first time I met Gray. I asked him if he was related to Robin Puryear, a wonderful person that I went to high school with. When he said Robin was his sister, I was hoping he'd be nice like her.
Gray did not disappoint! He was one of the nicest people I worked with in the City of Norfolk Recreation Department and was always so supportive of Lakewood Dance and Music Center.
Gray was so helpful and knew about everything! I can't even count the times I heard people say, "Ask Gray Puryear. He'll know." He was always kind and patient.
When I met his wife, I knew they were meant to be. Two nice people!
I will feel forever blessed to have known Gray and hope that everyone will have the chance sometime in their life to work with someone like Gray.

I just found out about Gray passing a few minutes ago as his funeral was in progress. I am so sorry , and I would have definitely been there if I had known. I worked with Gray for many years with the Norfolk Department of Parks and Recreation. What a lovely, smart and dedicated man. He also did the sound for my dance recitals for many years and was excellent. He and his wife, Sharon, were such a devoted couple and loved each other. They were so blessed to have each other for so many years. Gray was a man of many talents. One of my
fondest memories was of Grey checking out our easter bunny costume every year in order to be the easter bunny for the children at his church. What a wonderful man who will be greatly missed and was such a gift to everyone he knew.

I will miss you, Big Brother. Growing up, I wanted to be like you. When I decided to go to college, I wanted to go to Old Dominion University just like you...and I graduated! It was a long time ago, but I hope I made you proud. Say Hi to Mama for me!

I will miss seeing Gray. He was always positive and calm and it was great having conversations with him over the years. I hope he is healthy and happy with the Lord and spending time with past family & friends who went before him.
