Gustavo A. Saberbein-Chevalier was born on March 31, 1945, and passed away on August 15, 2025, at the age of 80, following a courageous 17-year battle with colon cancer. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dora, and his loving sons, Gustavo, Carlos, and Alberto.

Gustavo was an extraordinary man whose life was marked by unwavering dedication to his family and a profound compassion for others-especially the vulnerable and those in need of support.

A proud Peruvian, he served his country with distinction as Minister of Economics during the first term of President Alan García. His commitment to public service extended well beyond his time in office. He remained deeply involved in numerous organizations across Peru and the United States, tirelessly advocating for education, equality, diversity, and-above all-social justice for those most in need.

In the United States, Gustavo served as Vice President of Saint Augustine College in Chicago, where he continued his mission of empowering underserved communities through education. In recognition of his leadership and contributions, he was honored in 2015 by both Telemundo and Univision as a distinguished Peruvian and Hispanic leader.

Gustavo's life was a testament to integrity, service, and love. His legacy will continue to inspire all who knew him, and he will be profoundly missed by his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 19 from 4:00-8:00pm with a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 7:00pm at Michaels Funeral Home & Cremation Care, 800 S. Roselle Rd., Schaumburg. For more information please call 847-891-2900 or visit www.michaelsfh.com
