Harold Tomes, 86, a beloved member of the Mount Vernon, Ohio community, passed away peacefully, joining his loving wife, Roberta Tomes, whom he cared for devotedly until her passing.
Harold was born on March 25, 1939, in Sunfish, Kentucky, to Edgar and Daphne Tomes. From his early years, Harold embodied a spirit of kindness, hard work, and generosity - qualities that would define his entire life.
After moving to Mount Vernon, Harold became a familiar face throughout the town as the proud owner of the local NAPA store. It was there that he built lasting friendships and touched countless lives with his welcoming smile and genuine interest in others. He truly never met a stranger, and his ability to connect with anyone made him a cornerstone of the community.
In retirement, Harold found great joy in one of his favorite hobbies - mowing his lawn. But true to his giving nature, this hobby was never just for himself. He could often be found mowing the lawns of neighbors, friends, and even returning to the NAPA store to tend to the grounds. His dedication to helping others extended far beyond his business, reaching into the hearts and yards of those around him.
Perhaps most inspiring was Harold's unwavering devotion to his wife, Roberta. He stood faithfully by her side through every challenge, caring for her with deep love and compassion until the very end.
Harold's legacy lives on through his family and the many lives he touched. He is survived by his son, Glen (Mary) Tomes; grandchildren, Derek (Angela) Tomes, Darren (Crystal) Tomes, Cassie (John) Millburn, and Andrew Hawkins; his brothers, Truman Tomes and Sherman Tomes; and many great-grandchildren who will continue to carry forward his spirit of kindness and service.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, Harold was preceded in death by his brother, Newman Tomes.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects during calling hours on Thursday, July 10th, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Lasater Funeral Home, 11337 Upper Gilchrist Road, Mount Vernon, Ohio. A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 11th, at 11:00 a.m. at Liberty Chapel Cemetery.
Harold's life was a shining example of what it means to love and serve others wholeheartedly. He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
