Died: February 1, 2024 in DeKalb, IL
Harriet Anne "Hattie" George, 73, passed away on February 1, 2024, at Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb, IL. She was surrounded by many loved ones as the Lord took her home.
Hattie was born on August 5, 1950, in Sycamore, IL. She was born with cerebral palsy but attended West Elementary School for two years. Hattie's mother was one of the founders of Opportunity House in Sycamore and Hattie worked at Opportunity House for several years. Later in life, Hattie resided at the Bethphage Mission in Axtell, Nebraska. She lived at Genesis House in Genoa, Illinois from 1981 until 2001 when she moved to a Community Integrated Living Arrangement (CILA) on Loren Drive in DeKalb, where she resided for 20 years. At her passing, she was living at a CILA in Genoa, Illinois. Harriet's family would like to thank the people at Avancer Homes, LLC in Genoa for the care they provided for Hattie over the years.
Despite her developmental disabilities, Hattie was quite athletic in her early life. She enjoyed swimming, bike riding and bowling. She once won a gold medal for the 50-yard dash at the Special Olympics in Lincon, Nebraska.
She loved music, especially the Beatles, the Monkees and anything Motown. She loved dogs, especially her dog, the beagle named Annie, who she is now running with in Heaven.
Hattie is preceded in death by her father, Wright Kelso George; her mother, Margaret (Byers) Larson; her stepfather, Paul V. Larson; her brother, Kelso D. "Kelly" George and various aunts and uncles, including her beloved Aunt Olive "Ollie" Cudden.
Hattie is survived by her brother, Wright Bruce George (Mary) of Ft. Myers, FL.; her brother, Scott Paul Larson (Jean) of Geneva, IL: her nephews Brett George of Edwards, CO: CW George (Carmen) of Ogden UT: Paul Larson and Kelly Larson of Geneva, IL; and her niece, Bethany Larson of Sycamore, IL.
A private burial service will be held on February 5, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at South Grove Township Cemetery, where Harriet will be placed next to her mother. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held on at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 218 Somonauk, IL at 10:30 a.m. on April 20, 2024, with a luncheon to follow at the parish hall next door.
