Helen Pekar Obituary

Helen Pekar, 98, passed away Friday, July 25, 2025 at her home in Lancaster, Ohio.
She was born in Uhrichsville, Ohio. Helen was one of the first female law officers in Ohio as a Deputy Sheriff with the Summit County Sheriff's Department from the early 1960's until her retirement in 1982. She first served in the Civil Division, and then the Patrol Division, the Detective Bureau, and as the Jail Commander. One of the highlights of her career was her pivotal role in apprehending a serial rapist in the Akron area in 1966, for which she received a commendation from the National Police Hall of Fame. One of her more fun assignments was to escort celebrities who came to Akron for the All-American Soap Box Derby.
Upon their retirement, she and her husband Robert moved to Stuart, Florida where they lived until Robert's death in 2002. Helen then moved back to Ohio and lived with her son John and daughter-in-law Rosanne in Lancaster, Ohio.
She was preceded in death by husband, Robert Pekar; her parents, Sam and Rachel Kousagan; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Pete and Peggy and Andrew and Sarah Kousagan. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Rosanne Pekar; goddaughter, Eva Marie Wolfe; nephews, Jim (Pam) and Sam (Mary) Kousagan; and niece, Melissa Kousagan.
The family will receive friends Saturday, August 2, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Anthony Funeral Home of Green, 4178 Massillon Rd. Uniontown, Ohio 44685 where the funeral service will take place at 12 p.m. Interment at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens in North Canton, Ohio.
