Homer Russell Smith, Sr., 92, passed away on July 22, 2025 in Gulfport, MS. Homer was born on August 04, 1932 in Gulfport, MS to parents James Daniel and May Johnson Smith. Dad was a wonderful man, always putting his family first. He is survived by two sons and a daughter Daniel Smith, Homer R. Smith Jr., Karen Leigh Beasley, and too many grand, great, great great grandchildren to list. From a young age Dad understood the meaning of responsibility and family. After losing his dad after just 13 years of age, he stepped up to help Granny work on the family farm. That early sense of duty and resilience defined the man he would become. Years later, he met and fell in love with Mae Mae, my mother, who remained the love of his life for 69 years. Mother passed in 2020, but Dad still loved her and celebrated their wedding anniversary until he joined her in heaven. Dad worked hard for his family. In the late 50's and into the 60's, he worked on the gas pipeline with installing gas lines and water purification plants. He worked from north Mississippi, Arkansas, north Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee, but we traveled with Dad as a family. We came back to the coast for good in 1963. Dad worked for Weaver and Sons Plumbing until he retired. He worked on the test stand at Nasa in the Kiln, Gulf Coast Coliseum, Gulf Coast Casinos, Memorial Hospital, and many other jobs on the coast. Dad was a fantastic cook and would cook for all of the holidays, Easter, Thanksgiving, and of course Christmas. We ate like kings, but his specialty was candy, fudge, pralines, and divinity. It was some of the best homemade candy you could have ever tasted. Two nights before Dad passed, I overheard him say these words, "Thank you Jesus, Thank you Lord, You are the greatest King that ever walked on the face of this Earth." Dad was greatly loved and will be greatly missed.
