Ione Gladys Sampsell, 91, of Lisbon, ND, passed away peace­fully on June 10, 2025 at CHI Health Hospital in Lisbon, ND.
Ione was born on September 11, 1933 in Wetonka, South Dakota. She was the daughter of Idris "Pete" Kaven and Alma Hering Kaven. She grew up in rural South Dakota on farms in We­tonka and Richmond Lake. Ione had 2 brothers, 3 sisters,1 stepsister and 1 stepbrother. She gradu­ated from Westport High School in Westport, SD. She married Deane Sampsell, also of Westport, on September 15, 1951 in Warner, SD.
Deane and Ione made their first home in Igloo, SD at the Black Hills Army Depot. Her employ­ment in Igloo included clerical work and a posi­tion in finance and accounting. Their daughter, Jodie, was born in Hot Springs, SD on December 22, 1960. In 1964, a job transfer took them to Jennings, MO, a suburb of St. Louis, MO. Ione enjoyed a career at Northland Bank in Jennings, in the Safe Deposit department of the bank. The next job transfer in 1974 took them to Warren, MI. In Warren, Ione worked at several part time jobs. She took courses through the GIA; Geological Institute of America and worked the remainder of her career selling fine jewelry. The final move for them was to Lisbon, ND to be near their daughter and son-in-law.
Ione enjoyed collecting antiques, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles and reading books.
Ione is preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Alma Kaven; her husband, Deane Sampsell; brothers, DuWayne and Daryl Kaven; sisters, Darlene (Kaven) Maier, Maxine (Kaven) Smith; stepsister, Lavila Kaven and stepbrother Owen John Kaven.
Ione is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jodie and Dennis York; her sister Marilyn (Kaven) Bieber and many nieces and nephews.
Interment will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens Mausoleum, Aberdeen, SD. A private memorial service will take place at a later date.
