Sinton - On July 18th, Ira Jackson "Jackie" Knox, Jr. passed peacefully and returned home to his Lord and Savior.
Jackie was a lifelong member of the Sinton community and the First Baptist Church of Sinton. He had the good fortune of having many friends, work colleagues and tax customers throughout his life. Jackie didn't have any hobbies because he was always too busy working. He loved to work.
Through his work at TxDOT and the City of Sinton, he had the opportunity to positively impact his community. He was proud of Sinton and San Patricio County. He worked hard to make it better for those around him. Jackie retired from TxDOT after 34 years of service, most of those as maintenance supervisor for San Patricio County. Four days after retiring, he started a second career as the City Manager for the City of Sinton, serving as City Manager for 15 years.
While working for TxDOT, Jackie also began working with Pearl Thames doing tax work to earn extra money. He enjoyed working with Pearl and continued to prepare tax returns for people all around the state of Texas for more than 50 years. One of his favorite things was eating at Kings Inn at the end of every tax season. Jackie enjoyed meeting new customers and the challenges associated with those who hadn't filed with the IRS for many years.
Jackie was born on March 3rd, 1943, to Ira Jackson Knox and Clytis Bebee Knox. He had one sibling, Margaret Knox Harris, who he loved and communicated with daily. He lost his father at an early age, but never lost focus on being a good son, caring brother and loving father. He lived his life and showed love through actions not words.
Jackie married Mary Dell Coates on December 28, 1963. He and Mary Dell were married for more than 60 years and made their home in Sinton where they raised two sons. Mary Dell was truly the love of his life. His affection for her was obvious in everything he did. You rarely saw one without the other and his calm, strong demeanor was the perfect compliment to Mary Dell's outgoing, adventurous nature. Jackie was a true family man who always made the most of the time he spent with those he loved. He was generous to a fault, a trait he inherited from his father.
Jackie is preceded in death by his father Ira Jackson Knox, mother Clytis Bebee Knox and eldest son Ira Jackson Knox, III.
Jackie is survived by his loving wife: Mary Dell Coates Knox; son: Robert Stephen Knox (Kathy Knox) and sister: Margaret Knox Harris. He is also lovingly survived by his grandchildren: Amanda Knox Wilson (Stephen Wilson); Elizabeth Knox (Rueben Ramirez); Robert Knox; Julie Knox; Corrigan Knox. Great-grandchildren who brought joy to his life include: Sydney Knox; Gavin Knox; Dylan Wilson; Rebecca Wilson; Khloe Knox; Cason Vannatter; and Sofia Ramirez. one precious great-great-grandchild: Easton " Stetson" Yepez.
Jackie will be missed and celebrated. Most of all, he leaves us with the respect and admiration that he earned over his lifetime through his actions, not his words: 10-4
Services will be held on Friday, July 25, 2025, 10:00 AM at the First Baptist Church, Sinton. The burial will follow in Lamas Memorial Park Cemetery, Taft.
