Jackie Penland Obituary

Jackie JR Penland, Jr., age 73, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 6th, 2025, at his sister's home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Jackson William and Jewell Edith Mathis Penland. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Leroy and Ronnie Penland.
Jackie was an avid outdoorsman, spending a lot of his free time camping, hunting, and sitting around the campfire. He also loved mechanicing, especially on old cars. His greatest enjoyment though came from spending time with his family. He had a very giving heart, and always had an open door for a stranger or someone in need. His warm smile and gentle nature will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Left to cherish his memory are a brother, Joey Penland of Swannanoa, and a sister, Tammy Penland of Burnsville; as well as nephews: Austin Penland, and Cody Dodd and wife, Jessica; and nieces: Bethany Penland and Tritan Penland.
Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, July 11th, in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Service. The family will receive friends from 3 until 4 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be private.
