Dr. Jackie G. Smith
February 23, 1949-September 28, 2025
Dr. Jackie G. Smith, age 76, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away at home on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
Jackie was born February 23, 1949, in Sweetwater, Texas, to Jess Lee Smith and Elvie Mae Yarbrough Smith. In 1967 he graduated from Roscoe High School, where he began his life of leadership and service, attending Boys State in 1966, serving as vice president of his senior class, captain of the Roscoe Plowboys football team, president of the band, a member of the National Honors Society, Best in Sports, and Mr. RHS.
He married Marilyn Frances Wallace on August 7, 1970, in
San Angelo, Texas. He earned BS, MS and PhD degrees in Agricultural Economics from Texas Tech University, University of Florida, and Oklahoma State University, respectively.
After serving as an assistant professor at Tarleton State University, Jackie joined Texas AgriLife Extension in 1984 as Professor and Extension Specialist and served for 36 years, assisting thousands of Texas agricultural producers. His specializations included farm and ranch management and production economics, specifically focusing on marketing, budgeting and computerized record keeping.
In 1998 the American Agricultural Economics Association recognized Jackie and his coworkers with the Distinguished Extension Team Award for their Master Marketer program. The USDA further recognized the team with the National Award for Excellence in Washington, DC, in 2000, also for the Master Marketer program.
He was awarded the Texas Tech College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources Distinguished Alumni Award in 2014 and named Professor and Extension Specialist Emeritus by Texas A&M in 2021.
Deemed by his wife and children the "best husband and dad one could ever have," Jackie met head-on the challenges of a single father when his wife Marilyn died suddenly in 2000. A long-time member of Quaker Avenue Church of Christ, he served as a deacon (1986-1997) and elder (1997-2000). He was an avid fisherman, golfer, 42 player, singer, bicyclist, and teacher, but always kept his roles as husband and father first.
Jackie was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn Smith, parents Jess and Elvie Smith, brother Jimmy Dean Smith, sister-in-law Dixie Lee Templeton Smith, father-in-law J.C. Wallace, Jr., mother-in-law Jewell Frances Bloodworth Wallace, and sister-in-law Donna Marie Wallace Morton.
Those left to cherish his memories are his daughter Jessica Smith Mullins (Will) of Lubbock and son Joel Smith of Lubbock; brother Delbert Smith (Jeri) of Lubbock and sister Janice Flemmons (Bill) of Lubbock; brothers-in-law Jacky Wallace (Pam) of Abilene and Buddy Wallace (Kip) of Robert Lee; and sister-in-law Susan Millican (Troy) of Sterling City; along with a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family, and friends.
