James R. Bolek, age 87, of Oshkosh, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025.
Jim was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Frank and Francis Bolek. He completed his bachelors and masters-level education at University of Wisconsin and proudly served his country in the US Army. These early experiences were where he developed the values of duty, compassion, and service that defined his life.
Jim built a meaningful career in social work. He served with dedication at Parkview Health Center and Winnebago Mental Health Institute in Oshkosh, where he supported individuals with empathy and dignity. He was admired by colleagues and patients alike for his professionalism, kindness, and quiet yet steady presence.
Jim was a man of many interests. He had a lifelong love of music—especially Dixieland jazz and the vibrant sounds of marching bands. He held a special fondness for the University of Wisconsin Badger Band and seldom missed a halftime performance or 5th Quarter when attending football games. He was also an enthusiastic fan and season ticketholder of Wisconsin Badger football and basketball, supporting his teams through every season for many years.
In addition to music, sports, and travel, Jim enjoyed playing cards with his group of buddies. Those regular games were full of good-natured competition and the kind of camaraderie he valued. Jim was also a long-time volunteer at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton where he ushered for countless performances over 20 years.
Jim’s life was marked by his sense of curiosity and lifelong learning, loyalty, and service to others. He was a supportive cousin, uncle, and friend and was valued in the communities he was engaged with.
He is survived by cousins, nieces and nephews, along with close friends who were like family to him. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bernice, and his parents.
Heartfelt gratitude is extended to the ThedaCare Neenah nursing and hospice staff for their compassionate care and support during Jim’s final days.
A funeral mass celebrating Jim’s life will be held on July 12, 2025 at St. Vincent Church, 1225 Oregon Street in Oshkosh. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am until the time of mass at 11:00 am.
