James Leonard Haukoos

April 8,1942 - July 5, 2025

James Leonard Haukoos, beloved husband, teacher, coach, and community member was the son of Leonard and Selma Haukoos and was raised in Walters, Minnesota. A proud graduate of Kiester High School in Kiester, MN, Jim went on to shape the lives of countless students and athletes throughout his life.

As a young man, Jim spent several summers working as a telegraph operator for the Rock Island Railroad, a role that sparked his lifelong appreciation for hard work and discipline. He later pursued higher education at Winona State Teacher’s College, (now Winona State University) where he was also a dedicated member of the football team, serving as the snapper for special teams.

After earning his degree, Jim married the love of his life, Karen. Together, they began their journey in Wasco, California, where Jim held his first teaching position. In 1969, they set about on a new life in the region they have come to love, settling near the Mississippi River, and Jim began a 30-year teaching career at the Cochrane-Fountain City School District.

A passionate educator and coach, Jim was deeply committed to his students, both in the classroom and on the field. He coached football, track and field, and girls golf.

Jim’s dedication extended beyond the school walls. He served his community as a volunteer driver for the Scenic Valley Ambulance, sang in the St. John’s Lutheran Church Choir, and chaired the Foelsch Park Committee, helping to enhance the lives of his neighbors and friends.

An avid outdoorsman, Jim cherished his time spent near the river. He was a skilled duck hunter who spent many early mornings launching from the Merrick State Park landing, and he took great pride in his walleye fishing, often turning his catches into delicious meals for his family. He also enjoyed golf, finding joy in the camaraderie, fresh air, and personal challenge the game offered.

Jim Haukoos will be remembered for his steady kindness, unwavering dedication to others, and his deep love for family, community, and the natural world.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Selma, and two sisters, Donna and Shirley.

He is survived by his loving wife, Karen; sons, Chris of Buffalo City, WI and Timothy (Nimfa) of Pensacola, FL, and one special grand daughter, Maria, of Port Hueneme, CA; sister, Karen Holtz of Kiester, MN and several nieces and nephews.

A Service honoring Jim will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Alma, WI at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 12th. Friends and family are welcome to attend a visitation at the church beginning at 11 A.M. and concluding at the time of service.
