Reverend James Warren Hawkins, known to most as Reverend Hawkins and to the rest of us as Daddy, or Papa, age 80 of Winchester, VA, formerly of Augusta, WV, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2025.
He was born to Delsie Pearl and Andrew Hawkins on January 8, 1945, in Baltimore, MD. He quit school young to help support his family but later went back and got his Masters of Theology. He was lovingly married to his sweetheart Christine for 61 years. Together they had 3 kids, 10 grandkids, and 14 great-grandkids. His family was everything to him, he was the definition of a loving grandfather and husband.
In his younger days, he worked for the union as an ironworker and eventually owned his own construction company. He was very proud of his blue-collar days. He pastored 3 churches and was involved in ministry for decades. He went on 12 mission trips, studied theology, and never stopped sharing the Word. He walked 2 to 6 miles every day, even into his 70s and lovingly helped his wife care for her beautiful garden together.
He always had a joke ready. Always had candy in his pocket or a Hot Wheels car to hand out to kids. When he was young, he drove race cars. He wrote a book, gave it to everyone he met as a testament to his faith, and had another one halfway done. He believed in giving what he had. Even if it was just $1, he'd give it.
He leaves behind his wife, 3 children, Andy (Debbie), Kathy (Matt), and Susie (Troy), 10 grandkids, and 14 great-grandkids, 2 sisters, plus brothers- in-laws, nieces, nephews, and a whole lot of people who loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father, mother-in-law, and several siblings.
Reverend Hawkins lived every day serving the Lord and was a living testimony of the power of faith. He shared with everyone he met how much he loved Jesus. We know he is so happy he is now with his lord and savior. We'll miss him every day.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at 12:00 Noon at Giffin Funeral Home & Crematory in Capon Bridge, WV, with Pastor David Palmer officiating. Interment will follow at Green Lane Cemetery, Delray, WV.
