James Oliver Shifflett, 88, of Elkton, passed away on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Birch Ridge Senior Living in Staunton.
Mr. Shifflett was born December 28, 1936, in Virginia and was the son of the late James Ollie and Clara Ann Shifflett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Darryl Glenn Shifflett; two sisters, Charlotte Ann Shifflett and Frances Shifflett, as well as a brother-in-law, David Shifflett.
On December 6, 1954, he married Ora Mae Eye Shifflett, who also preceded him in death on April 12, 2016.
James was a carpenter and painter since he eighteen, continuing up until nine years ago. He usually worked two full time jobs, so in addition to carpentry and painting, he worked as an attendant at Kings Park State Hospital. James was a simple man and a jokester, he loved gardening, watching NASCAR, he was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan, enjoyed going bowling and playing softball in his adult years. He also loved his sons dog, Patrick, who was his side-kick.
He is survived by a son, Scott Michael Shifflett, Sr.; two daughters, Ethylene Watson and husband, Gary, and Marlene Deegan; two brothers, Ed Shifflett and wife, Joan, and Lee Shifflett and wife, Martha; four sisters, Nancy Shifflett, Alice Herring and husband, James, Patricia Alger and husband, Rev. Randy Alger, and Linda Morris and husband, Doug; a brother-in-law, Joe Shifflett; five grandchildren, Amber Watson, Jennifer Deegan, Andre Deegan, Heather Shifflett, and Scott Shifflett, Jr., as well as three great-grandchildren, Kaelynn and Kylee Shifflett, and Rhonin McGowan.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m., Friday, July 18, 2025, at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in McGaheysville, with Deacon Fred LaSpina officiating.
Friends and family may pay their final respects from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m., Thursday, July 17, 2025, at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dementia Society of America, P.O. Box 600, Doylestown, PA 18901.
