James Van Eck Obituary

James E. "Jim" Van Eck, Jr., 77, of Au Train, MI, passed away at his home with his family by his side on May 15, 2025 after a brave battle with kidney disease.
He was born April 3, 1948, in Detroit, MI, to James and Cornelia Van Eck. Jim attended Gross Pointe High School, Grand Rapids Junior College, Calvin College and earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan – Flint Campus.
Jim married Meredith J. Holmes on July 7, 1973 and together they shared 51 wonderful years of marriage.
Jim had a passion for healthcare that started at the age of 12 through the Explorer's Club, he worked for multiple hospitals and organizations across the United States, but spent the most time at Munising Memorial Hospital as a Nurse Anesthetist for 17 years. His heart was set on providing excellent care for all his patients.
His other passions included artwork, woodworking, building, painting, interior and exterior design; he loved animals, nature, and watching action and comedy movies. He enjoyed Chinese food, steak, cigarettes, and Pepsi; and always had stories to share such as hitchhiking from Detroit to California, attending Woodstock, and playing music with Glenn Frey of the Eagles.
He is survived by his wife, Meredith Van Eck of Au Train; son, James (Callie Ruohomaki) Van Eck III of Au Train; accepted grandchildren, Camrin and Sienna of Negaunee; sister, Carol Van Eck of Grand Rapids, MI; and his beloved animal companions, Leia and Ruby. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will be held in the family home on Saturday, May 24 at 4pm.
