Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jefferson Funeral Chapel - Alexandria on Dec. 11, 2024.
Jeffrey Allen Wheeler was born on July 1, 1954 in Welch, West Virginia. He lost his fight with metastasized melanoma bone cancer and passed away peacefully on November 20, 2024. He was at home and constantly surrounded by loved ones. He had the heart of a lion and a very strong will to live.
Jeff grew up in the hills of Davy, West Virginia with his family, aunts, uncles and many cousins. To say he was well known in town is an understatement. When he was 11 he broke into the liquor store and got the whole town drunk. He said he threw the bottles out the window on the creek side and floated them down the river in an upside-down car top. This is only one of his many adventures that made him a true legend and very well known to the town Cop. I met Jeff in October 1975 and went out dancing that night and it's truly been an endless love ever since. We've never been apart.
Jeff spent 36 years working for the Alexandria Sanitation Authority Wastewater Treatment Plant in
Alexandria, VA. He started out as an Operator I and continued his education to achieve his Class 1 Operators License, which is the highest you can go in the state. It was through his dedication and hard work that he then worked his way up to Supervisor. He loved his job and everyone he worked with. Jeff became well known on the plant for his love of food and knowledge of the best places to eat. This was prevalent in the nickname he was given. If you wanted to know a good place to eat, just ask "Menu", he can tell you where to go. He retired in 2010 and spent the rest of his years doing whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted.
Anyone that knows Jeff, knows his love for softball. His greatest joy was playing and then coaching the Huntington Bulldogs. What started out as a fun Saturday afternoon ball game at our community park turned into a competitive top flight softball team made up of a group of best friends that now travelled all over the state to compete in tournaments. The Huntington Bulldogs became a very well-known team.
Jeff never met a stranger and his kindness, generosity, and sense of humor touched everyone who knew him. He was a very caring and devoted friend and was always willing to lend a helping hand. His friends and family remember him as a man of great integrity and warmth. He had such a love for his family and cherished his late-night phone calls with everyone. His greatest joy was getting together with his family for a poker game. He hated to lose and they loved taking his money. He was very dedicated to his family and always offered to support anyone in need. He was the kindest, most loving man and his empathy was undeniable. Heaven has truly gained an Angel!
Jeff is survived by his loving wife Lulu as well as his sisters, Barbara Morgan, Phyllis Hook, Mary Newcomb, Leona Cook and his brother Steve Wheeler. He was a devoted uncle to many of his nieces and nephews to whom he loved so very much. Jeff was preceded in life by his mother Mabel Wheeler, father John Wheeler, brother Carson Wheeler and sisters Shelby and Wanda Wheeler.
Jeff's family would like to thank all those in attendance for helping us celebrate his life. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends but will forever live on in our hearts and memories. We also know that we will one day see him again when we join him in the house of the Lord.
In lieu of flowers, please consider contributions in Jeff's honor to The
American Cancer Society
