It is with deeply heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jerry Mack Packer, 83, of McLendon-Chisholm, Texas. Jerry passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, at his home in Rockwall, surrounded by the love of his family. Jerry was a bold force in this world, touching countless lives with his bright spirit and dedication to service.
Born in
Jacksonville, Texas, on June 5, 1942, Jerry was one of three sons to Vernon J. "Jack" Packer and Flora Marie Shipp. He was raised with strong values, a love for the outdoors, and a sharp mind for business and problem-solving - traits that would shape his life. Jerry graduated from Samuel High School in Dallas, and at 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Jerry served from 1960 to 1964 and was stationed at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Even after his honorable military service, Jerry remained committed to the values of integrity and hard work.
In 1960, Jerry married the love of his life, Shirley Marie Holton, at Oak Hill Baptist Church in Dallas. Their journey began as high school sweethearts, with Shirley initially playing hard to get - but it didn't take long for Jerry's persistence and heart to win her over. Together, they built a marriage rooted in love, faith, and countless adventures that spanned 65 beautiful years. They raised three sons: Brett, Clint, and Jack - and led their family by example, always putting God and one another first. Jerry and Shirley also taught Sunday School together at First Baptist Church of Heath, where they have been longtime members.
Professionally, Jerry earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. He was a Certified Public Accountant and member of the Texas CPA Society for over 50 years. Jerry was a visionary and began his career as a CPA with Arthur Young and then served as Controller for Ward Hunt. Eventually, Jerry returned to his roots in the brick industry - founding Packer Brick, Inc. in Garland, Texas. Known for its commitment to quality and innovation, Packer Brick became a cornerstone in the industry. In the early 1990s, Jerry developed a strong partnership with a demolition contractor in Chicago, through which he began importing Chicago Antique Brick by the boxcar. When reclaimed brick became sparser and more expensive, Jerry collaborated with CBC Brick in Oklahoma to develop a custom KINGSIZE brick that resembled old antique brick - a product that became one of the most popular choices in the region for the next two decades.
Never one to slow down, Jerry later founded Quail Creek Land and Cattle, where he poured his time and energy into land development, raising cattle and baling hay - passions that became central to his life in his later years. Furthermore, he even went on to develop two neighborhoods in McLendon-Chisholm. An East Texas boy at heart, Jerry was a true cowboy who found peace and purpose on his land. He also had a love of quail hunting with his bird dogs, a hobby he shared with the younger generation and promoted as a Packer tradition.
Jerry's impact extended far beyond business. He was deeply rooted in his community, serving on the Planning & Zoning Commission for the City of McLendon-Chisholm and supporting numerous Rockwall County organizations focused on youth development. He was also a charter member of the Rockwall Dairy Queen Crowd, a morning gathering of city leaders and friends who met regularly to discuss current events - often joking about the "U-Haulers" moving in from Dallas, of which Jerry once was one himself.
Known for his sharp wit, loyal spirit, and generous heart, Jerry never met a stranger. He was humble, financially savvy, and always willing to help others. Jerry made people feel seen and valued, and his sense of humor was unmatched. Whether he was mentoring at church or simply offering sound advice to a loved one, you could always count on Jerry to be there. Above all, Jerry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who will be deeply missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing and loving him.
