Jess Smith Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Freeman Mortuary - Jefferson City on Nov. 11, 2025.
Mr. Jess W. Smith, age 67, of Henley, Mo., passed away November 8, 2025, at his home after a brief illness.
He was born in Quincy, Illinois on September 2, 1958, to the late Frank and Deloris (Bastean) Smith. Jess spent his life in the construction industry as a roofer until he broke his back and was unable to continue work.
Jess Smith was a man who lived life his own way - with a strong spirit, a generous heart, and a deep love for the simple things that made him happiest. Music was a big part of who he was, especially old country and rock. His favorite song, "A Country Boy Can Survive," fit him perfectly - it wasn't just a tune he enjoyed, it was the way he lived.
Jess found peace in the outdoors. Whether he was riding horses, casting a fishing line, or sitting under the night sky taking in the stars, nature was where he belonged. He could spend hours whittling or working on vehicles, and his creativity shone through in his wood-burned signs and drawings. Jess had a natural gift for making something special out of nothing but patience and imagination.
His love for the outdoors also brought joy to his family through countless camping trips and visits to Biloxi, Mississippi, where he enjoyed time with loved ones. He often joked that his only membership was to the "DOC," and if you were looking for him on a Saturday night, you'd likely find him with a cocktail in hand and The Gold Vault playing on the radio.
Jess was rough around the edges, a bit ornery, and as he liked to say, "had to be in trouble to behave." But behind that tough exterior was a man with a generous and loyal heart. He would give the shirt off his back and never hesitated to help anyone in need. His children carry fond memories of those camping trips, horseback rides, and four-wheeler adventures - times filled with laughter, stories, and love.
Above all, Jess was deeply devoted to his family, especially his grandkids. His most remembered words, "I love you the mostest," are a reflection of just how big his heart was.
Jess will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him - a true country soul who lived freely, loved deeply, and left behind memories that will be cherished forever.
Survivors include his children, Kristin Witt (Bobby) of Eldon, Mo., Michelle Moeller (Mike Vocks) of Frankenstein, Mo., Douglas Albert (Chrissy) of Eugene, Mo., Kurt Prenger (Chrissy) of Norfolk, Va; six grandchildren, Hannah and Abel Witt, William and Haley Moeller, Alex and Zack Prenger; one great grandson, Koa Mashaney; six siblings, Jerry Smith, Debbie Tuttle, Marshall Roark, Zip Smith, Leland Roark and Butch Reed.
He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Judy Smith; daughter, Kathi Ann Smith; and three siblings, Carla Smith, Jamer Smith, and John Smith.
Complying with his wishes, Jess was cremated and celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Jess Smith Memorial Fund, PO Box 95, Jefferson City, MO 65102.

Jess Wayne will be missed! Always joking , smiling , and laughing. Never a dull moment. He didn´t hesitate to help move me back home from South Carolina, as he was known for helping many.

Deepest sympathy,
