Joan F. Alfke, 94, of Black River, NY, passed away peacefully on June 21, 2025, at the Hospice Residence at the Ellis Farm.
She was born on September 25, 1930, in Utica, New York, the daughter of Howard W. and Harriet (Kylow) Blaich. Joan graduated from Watertown High School in 1948. She was employed by the Metropolitan Insurance Company on Stone Street in Watertown until the early 1960s. On September 24, 1955, she married Paul W. Alfke at the First Presbyterian Church in Watertown. The couple made their home in Black River beginning in 1965 and enjoyed spending winters in Sun City Center, Florida. Paul worked as an engineer for Jefferson County, he passed away September 13, 2020.
Joan enjoyed gardening, boating with close friends Dennis and Sally Risk, and, in earlier years, shopping in downtown Watertown.
She is survived by her sister, Ann Elizabeth Moulton of Minnesota; a niece and a nephew; and her longtime caretakers and dear friends, Steve and Nancy Lillie.
She is predeceased by her parents, her beloved husband Paul and their son David B. Alfke who passed on July 3, 1960.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at hospice for the exceptional care, compassion, and dignity they provided Joan in her final days.
Arrangements are with the Bruce Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Brookside Cemetery on Thursday, June 26th at 2 p.m..
