Joan was born in Flint, Michigan on June 26, 1931. She was the child of Aaron and Viola Lansford. She had one younger sister, Sharon. They all resided in Flint Michigan.

Joan married John Monahan on October 4, 1952, at Saint Michaels Catholic Church in Flint Michigan. The couple soon after settled into housing at Michigan State University. While there, they had three children, Michael, Matthew, and Karen. Sadly, Michael passed on January 3, 1955. After graduation, they moved to Mansfield, Ohio. One day while John was at work Joan accidentally caught the neighbor's corn field on fire. It was a smoky hot scene. The fire department extinguished the fire. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Newark, Ohio where they started a custom home building business while raising their family.

Joan had three additional children during her time in Newark Ohio, Terrance, Patrick, and Susan. It was a busy time for her to raise five children and operate a business. Unfortunately, Joan and John divorced, and Joan decided to relocate herself and her five children to Flushing, Michigan.

Joan sought employment with Hubbard Hardware where she performed clerical duties. She worked there for many years. In 1971, she invested in a convenience store franchise and experienced a successful operation. She recruited all of her children to work there and taught them the value of reaping the rewards of working hard. The store was so successful that the franchise corporation took it. Joan found employment with Genesee Bank. She worked in the loan and adjustment department. She retired in 1991.

Joan enjoyed reading, being creative, making custom cakes, and always looked forward to solving the questions on Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. She loved being a grandma more than life itself.

Joan is survived by her children, Matthew Monahan, Karen and husband Robert Keigh, Terrance Monahan, Patrick Monahan, Susan Montgomery; son-in-law, Louis Montgomery; Joan was blessed with ten amazing grandchildren, Jennifer, Amy, Spencer, Cole, Heather, Kyle, Jesse, Haily, Jack, and Mary. She was thrilled to have great grandchildren, Jordan, Ireland, Wynter, Kolton, Shannon, Bradley, Ali, Noah and Hannah.

Joan lived every day being grateful for all her blessings and always making sure to give thanks to God. "Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." (1 Thessalonians 5:18) Meaning regardless of any situation to be grateful and thankful for what you have.
