Joan Anita Susen, age 87, passed away on Friday, June 27, 2025, at her home in Salisbury, Maryland. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, she was the daughter of the late John Mawhinney and Esther (Nyenhouse) Mawhinney. In 2020, Joan moved from Northeastern Pennsylvania to her most recent home in Salisbury, Maryland. She often said she enjoyed the quiet neighborhood which had an abundance of Weeping Willow Trees and ponds. Her days were spent enjoying her home and her favorite pastime knitting. She knitted baby hats, blankets, lap warmers for veterans and scarves for friends and family.
Joan a woman of strong Christian Faith, tragically lost her husband, Leroy Susen; father to her sons Allan, John and David, in February 1976 and her young son James, in September of 1980. In a letter written to her sons to be read upon her death, she said although she was happy in life, she did not fear death and would be looking forward to being with her son James and her husband Leroy in the afterlife.
Joan was deeply loved by her family and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children Hospital or the American Cancer Society.
She is survived by three sons, David Susen (Carol Pomeroy- Susen), Allan Susen (Ruth), and John Susen (Loretta), a sister, Ruth Burns, seven grandchildren, Michael Susen (Suzan), Thomas Susen, Laurie Overton (Stephen), Melanie Vanderbeck (Benjamin), Leigh Glaudel (Bryan), Steven Susen (Brenna), and Andrew Susen (Miranda), and 17 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at the Laurel Grove Memorial Park in Totowa NJ.
