Joel Sterling Squires, age 81, of Hoover, Alabama, passed away
peacefully on June 10, 2025, at UAB West Hospital.
Joel was born on May 4, 1944, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to
Evelyn and Myron Squires. He was the younger of two sons, preceded in
birth and death by his brother, Myron Squires.
He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville and later
earned his MBA from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Joel
proudly served in the United States Army with a tour in Korea as a dog
handler and personnel officer.
Following his military service, Joel began a long and successful career in
the energy sector, working for Florida Power Corporation in St.
Petersburg, Florida, and later for the Tennessee Valley Authority. His
career took him to various locations across Alabama and Tennessee, but
he spent the majority of his professional life in Knoxville, Tennessee,
where he and his family made their home. After retiring, Joel obtained his
real estate license.
Joel loved boating and traveling with his beloved wife, Linda Squires. In
retirement, he especially cherished their time on Florida's Emerald Coast,
where they made their home along the Intracoastal Waterway. Some of
his happiest moments were spent soaking in the serene views from their
balcony.
He also found joy in reconnecting with fellow Vetrans sharing stories and
participating in social gatherings that celebrated their shared experiences
Joel is survived by his devoted wife, Linda, whose steadfast love and care
were a constant source of strength. He is also survived by his daughter,
Kristin Cacace, and her husband, Matt Cacace, of Birmingham, Alabama;
his son, John Squires of Knoxville, Tennessee; and his grandchildren:
Cameron Cacace of Birmingham, Grant Cacace and his wife, Gwennyth
Cacace, of Greensboro, North Carolina, and Olivia and Mitchell Squires
of Knoxville.
A celebration of Joel's life will be held on Monday, June 23, immediately
following visitation beginning at 2:00 PM in the Chapel of Vestavia Hills
Methodist Church.
