John Robert Mellem, 79, of Georgetowm, MN passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday November 6, 2024.
John was born August 21,1945 to Jean and Robert Mellem of Wyndmere, ND, where he grew up. He graduated from Wyndmere High School. While in high school, John participated and excelled in all forms of sport. After graduating, he entered Ellendale State Teachers College. While in college, he was drafted into the United States Army. He was stationed in Vietnam with the 114th Transportation Battalion. Upon his discharge he went to work for his uncle laying carpet. After working for several businesses, he started his own carpet laying business.
John and Dorothy Skrei were married in 1971. John became dad to Kathy, Dawn, Scott and AnnMarie. They lived in Dilworth, MN then moved to Georgetown, MN in 1985. They bought the Georgetown Bar in 1984. In 1990, John and his daughter Dawn bought the bar and have continued to run it until the present time.
John loved to play baseball and softball; he coached softball for many years as well. His love of sports included golf, golfing with friends at Edgewood Golf Course and taking many golf trips with them throughout the years.
In 2011, he met his partner, Mary Gault. They enjoyed traveling, watching Bison and Vikings games. In 2014, their dog Thor came into their lives, John and Thor developed a very special bond.
John dearly loved his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and Mary.
John is survived by his children, Dawn (Greg) Iverson, Scott (Kim) Coryell and Annmarie Mellem; his sister, Carol Braaten; his partner, Mary Gault; grandchildren, Shawn Coryell, Adam Lindstrom, Matthew Garman, Jake Coryell, Jessi Coryell and Chase Garner; great-grandchildren, Kamryn Lindstrom, Miles Garman, Emma Lindstrom, Louis Coryell, Saylor Lindstrom and Anders Coryell, and his nieces and nephews, Bobby Tesch, Cindy Tesch and Lorinda Braaten. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Donna Tesch and his daughter, Kathy Mellem.
Visitation will be Tuesday, November 12, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M., with a prayer service beginning at 7:00 P.M., at Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at 11:00 A.M., at Dilworth Lutheran Church, Dilworth, MN.
