Obituary of John "Jay" J. Whitman
John "Jay" Joseph Whitman, beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family, Wednesday June 25, leaving behind a legacy of quiet kindness, unwavering loyalty, and a deep love for family and learning. Born on November 22, 1963, Jay was the devoted son of the late Edwin and Agnes (Marqus) Whitman. From an early age, Jay was known for his gentle demeanor, quick intellect, and strong catholic faith.
A graduate of Austin Preparatory High School, Jay went on to have a long and steady career in retail sales.
A lifelong supporter of Boston sports, Jay was especially devoted to the Red Sox. He proudly owned a large and varied collection of Red Sox hats, which he wore with pride whether he was watching a game or simply going about his day. He also loved cheering on the Patriots, Celtics, and Bruins, and always kept up with the latest scores and headlines.
Family was at the center of Jay's world. He was deeply devoted to his nieces and nephews, treating them like his own and always making an effort to be a steady, loving presence in their lives. Whether it was remembering a birthday, offering advice, or just listening, Jay's support never wavered.
He also had a lifelong love for animals, especially cats and dogs, and was a caring pet owner. His compassion extended to all living things, and he found joy in the simple companionship of his furry friends.
Jay will be remembered for his intelligence, kindness, loyalty, and the quiet strength with which he moved through the world. He leaves behind a legacy of love, thoughtfulness, and quiet dignity.
Jay was predeceased by his beloved sister Mary E. Ground and cherished niece Kara Malatesta.
He is survived by his large extended family including his beloved siblings, Chris Whitman of Hyannis, Ma., Camille Pattie of Maynard, Ma., Carol and Eddie Malatesta of North Fort Myers, Fl., Lori and Paul Hamilton of North Chelmsford, Ma., Eddie Whitman of Hyde Park, Ma., and Andrew and Winnie Whitman of Manchester, Nh., as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews and cousins.
