Jonas Cole Cook, known fondly as J.C., passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, at the age of 86, surrounded by his loving family in Abingdon, Virginia. Born on July 29, 1938, in Drill, Virginia, to the late Walter Ranze Cook and Monnie Lou Hess Cook. J.C. lived a life characterized by commitment, and warmth.
For many years, J.C. dedicated himself to the coal mining industry, where his hard work and earned him the respect of his peers. He later became the proud owner of Cook's Grocery in Rowe, Virginia, a local establishment that became a hub for friends and families alike. His kind and welcoming personality allowed him to build lasting relationships with customers, always making others feel at ease.
In 1985, J.C. moved to Abingdon, Virginia, where he continued to embrace life with enthusiasm and vigor. His love for his family was evident in all he did. J.C. was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jonas Dwayne Cook, son-in-law, Roger Harris and nine siblings.
J.C. is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara Jean Breeding Cook, with whom he shared 63 years of marriage. Together, they built a family that includes their son, Rodney Cook and finance, Stephanie Caudill; daughter Peggy Harris; his brother, Douglas Cook; and his cherished sisters, Wanda Mitchell (Donald) and Ruth Smith. He was a devoted grandfather to six grandchildren and held a special place in the lives of several nieces and nephews, who will carry his memory forward with love.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 5, 2025, beginning at 6 pm with a song service at 7:00pm at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210. The funeral will be held on Sunday, July 6, 2025, at 2:00 pm at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service with Rev. Shane Breeding officiating. A private burial will be held at a later date.Pallbearers will be Tyler Cook, Logan Cook, Travis Cook, Ronnie Cook, Walter Cook, Ricky Mitchell and Alex Mitchell. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony Cook and Eddie Mitchell.
