Joseph Edward Zarick, lovingly known as "Joe Z," 69, of Warren, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 5, 2025, with his devoted wife by his side.
To know Joe Z was to love him. His infectious laugh, unmistakable sense of humor, and warm-hearted nature left a lasting impression on everyone he met. His presence lit up a room, and his kindness and generosity defined him.
Born on November 9, 1955, in Warren, Joe Z was the son of the late Joseph and Stella (Zimbicki) Zarick and remained a lifelong resident of the area. He graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1973 and went on to attend Kent State Trumbull Branch.
Joe built a successful and respected career as a painter. He began as a self-employed contractor, working on residential and commercial projects throughout the Mahoning Valley, and later joined Warren City Schools, where he worked until his retirement in 2003.
A man of deep community involvement, Joe Z was a proud member of St. Peter & Paul Byzantine Catholic Church. He was also active in many local clubs, including the SOI Club 2850, the Westside Maple Leaf's, and the Slovak Club, where he held numerous leadership roles and was currently serving as President of the Retirees.
Joe Z had many passions. He was an avid gardener, loved canning his homegrown peppers, and took pride in hosting gatherings-especially his legendary Christmas parties where he led carols with joy and gusto. A devoted sports fan, Joe cheered endlessly for the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. He and his wife Lisa were proud host parents for more than 50 Scrappers players for a decade, lovingly known as their "summer sons."
One of Joe's great joys was winemaking. Alongside friends Garvin and Chuck Z, his "Sunnybrook Farms" wines earned numerous awards at the Warren Italian American Festival. He was also a paranormal enthusiast and never missed an episode of Ghost Adventures or NCIS.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife of over 34 years, Lisa Scala, whom he married on January 4, 1991. He also leaves behind his brother Charles (Kim) Zarick, brother-in-law Joseph (Lori) Scala, nieces Morgan (Gerry) Gammon, Rachel Zarick, and Leah Scala, nephew Ryan Scala, his cherished fur babies Luna and Lizzy, and many cousins and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Thursday, July 10, 2025, from 5:00 to 6:50 PM at Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Rd NE, Warren. A prayer service will follow at 7:00 PM, officiated by Father Miron Kerul-Kmec.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joe's name to Healthy Hearts and Paws, 909 Martin Luther King Blvd SW, Warren, OH 44485.
