MS. JOYCE LOUISE GRIFFIN, age 74, of 5065 Wheeler Lake Road, Augusta, GA passed away on Wednesday, March 5th, 2025, at the Doctors Hospital in Augusta, GA. THOMSON FUNERAL SYSTEM, Thomson, GA oversees all arrangements.
MS. JOYCE LOUISE GRIFFIN, affectionately known as "G" by her oldest son and "Ma" by her other children, peacefully entered eternal rest on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at the age of 74.
Born on April 12, 1950, Joyce's life was a beautiful testament to love, kindness, and selflessness. Her heart was a beacon of compassion, always open to offering comfort and support to those in need. As a devoted mother, she not only nurtured her own children but also became a second mother to many. Her ability to listen without judgment, share wise counsel, and offer a levelheaded perspective made her a trusted confidante to all. Joyce's presence was a calming force, and her gentle spirit left an indelible mark on the hearts of everyone she encountered. Joyce's joy for life was infectious-from her laughter that could light up a room to her passion for gardening, which provided her with both peace and purpose. Her culinary skills, especially her famous potato salad, were legendary and a beloved feature at family gatherings and community events. Whether in the garden or the kitchen, Joyce's hands worked wonders, creating beauty and delicious meals for those she loved.
A woman of faith, Joyce accepted Christ at an early age at Hosannah Baptist Church, where she was baptized under the leadership of the late Rev. Thomas L. Scott. She later attended Broadway Baptist Church in Augusta, GA, under the guidance of the late Rev. Berry Williams. Joyce graduated from Mims High School (now McCormick High) and went on to earn a degree in Environmental Engineering and Waste Management from Augusta Technical College. Though she once dreamed of a career in law, her natural compassion led her to a fulfilling role as an Enrollment Coordinator at South Richmond Headstart, where she spent over 15 years serving families in need. Family was at the heart of Joyce's life. She cherished every moment spent attending her children's basketball games, cooking for family events, and taking vacations with her loved ones. Her home was always a welcoming place, filled with love for her children's friends, who affectionately called her a second mother.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, West and Mary Liza Broadwater Griffin, and her siblings: Charity Gilyard, Doris Griffin, Mary Alice Traynham, Willie Mae Griffin-Jackson, Sammie Griffin, George Griffin, Henry Griffin, and Eddie Griffin. She was also preceded in death by her beloved son, Kenneth Griffin. Those left to cherish her memory: one son, Kedrick Griffin; one daughter, April (Stevonn) Payne; her special daughter, Denise Hines, all of Augusta, GA; four grandchildren, Maxamus Griffin and Nygel Griffin of Charlotte, NC; Dashaun Judge, Sr. of Graniteville, SC. and Ayden Clyburn of Augusta, GA; two great grand-children, Dashaun Judge Jr. and Dorel Judge, both of Graniteville, SC. Joyce is also survived by her brother, Walker (Bo) Griffin of Clarks Hill, SC; her sister, Susie G. Jones of Evans, GA; her brother-in-law, Aaron Traynham of Alton, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Joyce's love, wisdom, and nurturing presence will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
