Earl Andrew Carter was born on August 24, 1933, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, to the late Thomas and Marion Carter. He lived a life of service, strength, and deep devotion to his family, community, and faith.
Earl proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served for 20 years with honor and distinction, retiring in 1972. During his military career, he was stationed in numerous locations both across the United States and abroad. His hard work, integrity, loyalty, and leadership earned him the rank of Sergeant, and he often shared stories of his rich and meaningful experiences with those he loved.
A man of many interests, Earl enjoyed watching sports, singing, photography, and indulging in sweet treats. He was a longtime and faithful member of Smalls Memorial AME Zion Church, where he served for 46 years in various roles including choir member, layman, trustee, and Pastor's Steward. For his years of dedicated service to the church and its leadership, he was honored with the title of Pastor's Steward Emeritus.
Earl also made a lasting impact as a school crossing guard, where he brought joy and encouragement to children daily. He took great pride in motivating students to do their best and often rewarded their good grades with candy, becoming a beloved figure in their lives.
Earl is survived by his children: Winnon Carter, Sr. (Gloria), Earl Carter, Jr., Patricia Jones Christopher), Sanford Liggins, Jr. (Ca'Saundra), and Shunda Liggins Wright (Antonio); grandchildren: Aaron Wilson, LaKiesha Liggins, Michael Day, Yvonne Carter (Charles), and Winnon Carter, Jr.; great-grandchildren: Sa'Mir, Taylor, Jordyn, Mylesha, Daysha, and Tiajah; great-great-grandchildren: Daysawn and Jayceon; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Annette Liggins Carter; his parents; his brothers: Benjamin, William, Raymond, Bernard, Charles, Joseph, and Donald Carter; and his sisters: Elizabeth, Teresa, Mary, and Esther.
Earl's life was a testimony of love, service, and faith. We are forever grateful to God for blessing us with such a wonderful husband, father, role model, and servant of God. His legacy will live on in all who knew and loved him. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Earl, please visit our floral store.
