June Fitch Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Golden Funeral Home of Bastrop, LLC on May 3, 2024.
June Castleman Fitch
June 14, 1927 - May 3, 2024
Mrs. June Castleman Fitch went to be with our Lord on May 3, 2024, in Bastrop, Louisiana at the age of 96. Funeral services will be held Monday, May 6, 2024, at the Chapel of Golden Funeral Home with Bro. Nat Barnett officiating. Family will receive friends on Monday, from 1 PM until 2 PM.
She was born in Oak Grove, La. on June 14, 1927, to Ervin and Annie Tucker Castleman, and grew up in a bustling, happy household with sisters Ervina, Gloria Mae, and Mary Ann and brothers Pard and Don.
On a blind date at the age of 19, she met Weldon Norsworthy Fitch of Oak Ridge, La, a recently returned WWII veteran whom she allured with false accounts of her service as a WASP pilot. He was charmed by her bravado, and on November 3, 1946, they became husband and wife and were married for 46 years.
June made her home with Weldon (Wimpy) in Oak Ridge where they raised four children: Weldon N., Jr, Sherrell Florine, Jessie Ervin (Johnny) and Danny Castleman. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Methodist Church and the Pierian Club and was a well-regarded town gossip. She served as Oak Ridge librarian for 35 years, instilling the love of reading adventures in her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She fell asleep most nights with a novel in her hand.
She was an avid sports enthusiast and regarded the calendar in anticipation of her teams' next game schedule. In her eye, there were three major seasons - basketball, baseball, and football. She loved watching her children and grandchildren play sports, but the family often had to sit elsewhere due to her boisterous cheers. She loved LSU and the Chicago cubs. When she obtained tickets to her first NCAA basketball tournament Final Four at age 64, she didn't let an ankle fracture keep her from attending. She returned to the tournament at age 71 healed and jubilant as ever!
June loved hosting family dinners, off-colored jokes, and celebrity tabloids. She could spend hours bantering with her family and telling obscure tales of her hometown. Her quick wit and playful sarcasm will be sorely missed.
June is predeceased by her parents, her husband, two sisters, two brothers, and one great-grandchild. She is survived by her four children, seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her family would like the thank the wonderful staff of Lagniappe Health Care who made her final years some of her favorite.
