June Schoen, 80, of Spalding, passed away unexpectedly at her home early Friday morning, June 27, 2025.
She was born on September 12, 1944 in Escanaba, daughter to Allen and Daisy (Heim) Smith. June graduated from Holy Name High School, class of 1962.
On August 31, 1963, the former June Smith married Clyde Schoen in Bark River.
During June's working years, she was employed with Community Action Agency Head Start for 15 years where she obtained her CDA. June then opened the first licensed group home daycare in the U.P. and was also head cook at North Central Area School before her retirement.
June was known for her involvement and dedication to many children in the area. She spent 45 years perfecting her sugar cookies, she made them for many events all over the U.P. June loved her family and those who were like family. If she wasn't baking cookies, she was with her husband of 62 years who helped her with cookies. They enjoyed going to the casino together and in the earlier years, they loved bike trips on the Harley. June was looking forward to the birth of her grandson, due in July.
Among survivors include her husband, Clyde of Powers; children, Marcia (Steve) Granquist of Powers, Mark (Shirley) Schoen of Hermansville, Lynn (Paul) Zelenak of Powers, Matt (Kym) Schoen of Brighton, MI, and Dan Wind of Spalding; grandchildren, Ryan (Roxanne) Raiche, Breeanne Granquist, Audra (Jason) Granquist, Rachel (Ethan) Buechler, Hannah Schoen, Ethan (Danielle) Ivey, Courtney Zelenak, Wyatt (Shameka) Ivey, Jake (Kaitlyn) Zelenak, James (Alyssa) Zelenak, Alex Zelenak, Marshall (Kerry) Zelenak, and Ashley (Brandon) Marsicek; 23 great grandchildren; siblings, Kathy (Rodney) LaMarche, John (Janice) Smith, Bob (Sheree) Smith; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Lorraine (Herman) Kleiman; brother, James Smith; and nephew, Kevin Smith.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday, August 16th from 1 – 5 p.m. (Central Time) at the William Anderson Sportsman's Club in Hermansville.
