She then enlisted in the US Air Force in 1980. She was honorably discharged in 1985. She married Charles E. Atkinson in 1980 and they had two children, Clayton and Ashley. She also enjoyed traveling to Maine, sipping an ICEE, watching Shemar Moore, and hosting friends and family. Karen was most proud of her family and having them all together in her final moments.
