Karen Cuthbert, 82, passed away unexpectedly at home on July 26, 2025, in Moretown, Vermont.

Born on November 19, 1942, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Karen spent her early years there before her family relocated to Ottawa. There she attended the prestigious Lisgar Collegiate Institute, laying the foundation for a life marked by adventure, dedication, and grace.

After graduation, Karen briefly worked for the Canadian military and then pursued nursing school for a year. However, a chance opportunity would chart the course of her first remarkable career. Responding to an invitation to a recruitment fair in Buffalo, NY hosted by United Airlines for prospective flight attendants, Karen stood out among more than three hundred applicants-one of only three women selected. Thus, began her long and distinguished tenure with United Airlines. Over the years, she rose through the ranks to become the 33rd most senior flight attendant at the airline-a testament to her professionalism and enduring commitment. She moved to New York City in the early 60's, where she met her future husband, Richard Piliero.

After many years of flying and living in New York City, and Weston, CT, Richard and Karen retired to the Green Mountains of Vermont. There Karen embarked on a second career as executive assistant to the Dean of Arts and Sciences at the University of Vermont, bringing her signature poise and organizational skills to academic life.

Karen was a loving wife, aunt, and sister. She is survived by her devoted husband Richard Piliero; her brother John; sister Leslie; brother-in-law Francis Piliero and his wife Susan; nieces Marion Agostinelli (Anthony) and Marisa LaFalce (Thomas); nephews Matthew Piliero and Michael Piliero (Kristine); as well as several grand-nieces and nephews.

Karen and Richard shared a deep love for animals-especially their beloved Samoyeds-and raised several over the years. Their mutual passion for travel and photography took them across North America, from the majestic peaks of Alaska and the Canadian Rockies, and to the African savannas, as well as ski destinations including Aspen, Mt. Hood, Sugarbush and Stowe.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a future date. Contributions in Karen's memory may be made to the Wildlife Defense Fund (wildlifedefense.org), Tunnels to Towers (t2t.org), or the Waterbury Ambulance Service (www.waterburyambulance.org).

May her memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved her.
