Karen Lagel Russell, born on November 28, 1968, in
Rock Hill, South Carolina, passed away peacefully from natural causes on February 15, 2026, in
Greensboro, North Carolina, at the age of 57.
Karen was a beloved wife, mother, daughter, and friend whose vibrant spirit touched all who knew her. She dedicated her professional life to serving as a building representative for the dean of NC A&T, where her warm personality and unwavering dedication left a lasting impact on colleagues and students alike.
Her life was filled with joy and love, especially when surrounded by family. Karen cherished every moment spent with her loved ones, whether it was during vacations at the beach or simply enjoying each other's company. Her passion for travel and her outgoing nature meant she never met a stranger, and her generous hugs and radiant smile were a testament to her kind heart.
A devoted member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Karen's faith was a guiding light throughout her life. She found great joy in her relationships with family and friends, including her husband, David Russell of Greensboro; her mother, JoAnn Alexander (Bernard) of York, South Carolina; her two sons, William Kittrell (Anteria) and Brandon Russell (Maddie) of Greensboro; and her cherished grandchildren, including William Kittrell, Jr; aunts, uncles and cousins.
Karen is also survived by her mother-in-law, Yvonne Russell of Yanceyville; her brother, Andre Ingram; her brother-in-law, Eric Russell (Chaka Khan); her sister-in-law, Tarsha Russell; her godmother, Alice Minniefield; and her godbrothers, Keith and Steve. Her loyal canine companion, Bailey, was always by her side, bringing her immense joy and comfort.
A memorial service will be held at noon on Thursday, February 26th, 2026 in Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1301 Alamance Church Road,
Greensboro, North Carolina, 27406. The family will receive friends thirty minutes prior to the service.
Karen's legacy is one of love, laughter, and an indomitable spirit that will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a world made brighter by her presence and a family that will forever hold her in their hearts.
