Kenneth Odell Ottum, age 84, of Ontario, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, June 20, 2025. He was born on May 20, 1941, to Edwin and Evelyn (Kolbo) Ottum.
A proud graduate of Ontario High School, Class of 1959, Ken was known for his strong work ethic, mechanical mind, and kind, generous spirit. He began his career at Chrysler in Belvidere, Illinois, before returning home to run the family farm after the passing of his father. Over the years, Ken also worked locally at Wildcat Mountain State Park, Steffrudes, Cashton Farm Supply, Northern Engraving, and ran a welding shop in Ontario. Despite his varied work life, Kenneth always returned to Norwegian Valley, where he remained deeply devoted to the Ottum family farm.
Kenneth's life was rooted in the land and in tradition. He took great joy in working with animals and crops on the hills of home. He especially enjoyed growing tobacco-a labor-intensive crop that reflected his dedication and respect for the farming heritage of his region. A true woodsman, he loved cutting firewood and found comfort in the steady warmth of a wood-burning stove. He had a lifelong appreciation for engines and trains, marveling at their craftsmanship and power. A regular at tractor, engine, and gun shows, Ken had a special fondness for Oliver tractors, reflecting his passion for mechanical ingenuity. Though he never traveled to Norway, Kenneth took great pride in his Norwegian roots, often reflecting on the stories and legacy of his family.
In quieter moments, he could often be found sipping coffee-especially with any dunkable cookie-picking blackberries, cooking chili, watching GunSmoke, feeding the hummingbirds, or splitting wood. He had a deep appreciation for nature, the changing seasons, and the peaceful rhythms of rural life. Kenneth enjoyed life's simple pleasures, especially his mother's fresh-baked biscuits and goulash. He had a particular fondness for rhubarb and cherry pies and proudly inherited the Ottum family sweet tooth, never passing up a bowl of ice cream.
Kenneth is survived by his brothers: Blaine (Joyce), Russel (Barb), Elvin, Nordahl, and Norman Ottum; along with many nieces, nephews, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant twin siblings, Stanley Alan and Sandra Ann; his sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and David Kennedy; his brother and sister-in-law, Mylan and Linda Ottum; and sister-in-law, Myrna Ottum.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 30, 2025, at Brush Creek Lutheran Church, rural Ontario, Wisconsin. Pastor Pat Ziems will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family and friends may gather for visitation at the church beginning at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
In loving memory of a man who treasured the land, his family, and the simple joys of life-Uncle Kenny will be dearly missed. A journey ended, with a legacy that lives on.
