Larry Douglas Charles Madgwick, 69, went to be with the lord Jesus Christ on May 10th 2025 surrounded by his family succumbing from his year and half battle with lung cancer.
Larry, born March 19, 1956, in Wayne County, Detroit, MI, was the son of Phyllis and Thomas Madgwick. He graduated high school in 1974 at Clarenceville High School in Livonia, MI, and shortly thereafter met Cindy (Huhta), with whom he had their first child, Carley Rae. The family later relocated to Rockland/Ontonagon, MI, where their other two children, Christa Marie and Jake Douglas, were born. He had various jobs in the chip yard and later as a cook, at Syls, Grandma Grooters, and later retired from Chars Cafe. His faith was essential to his being, and he was a dedicated member of his church community, participating in numerous activities and studies with his church family.
Larry was a true "hack"s man, a tinker of many things, and his yard was a testament to his creativity and passion for adventure. You could often find him meticulously lining up his toys-whether they were snowmobiles, bikes, or other contraptions-ready for the next ride. He had a knack for making his own path, both literally and figuratively, as he explored the trails with an adventurous spirit that inspired those around him.
One of his greatest joys was teaching his grandchildren to ride. He cherished those moments, sharing not just the thrill of speed but also the lessons of balance, control, and the joy of the outdoors. Larry was always on the lookout for ways to have more fun, and his imagination knew no bounds. He built BMX ramps that soared into the air, transforming his backyard into a playground of excitement. The loft became a makeshift skate park, filled with laughter and the sound of wheels on wood.
Larry's life was a testament to the power of adventure and connection. He savored every moment spent hunting, and sharing the beauty of the UP with friends and family. Larry's house was a beacon of warmth and hospitality, welcoming close family and friends during hunting season, and creating unforgettable memories for best friends Jack, Brian, brother Tom, Ron and many others. His passion for racing dirt bikes, which began in his 40s with Jake, inspired a new generation, including his grandson Chase. Larry's presence at races was electric, as he ran the gate, woke the pits, and cheered on his friends with infectious enthusiasm. From snowmobile hill climbs to bike scrambles, Larry embodied the spirit of the "old crazy guy" who lived life to the fullest.
Larry's survivors include his former wife Cindy (Huhta), their three children, Carley (Matt) Maki, Christa Madgwick, Jake (Natalia) Madgwick, and four cherished grandchildren, Allyson, Chase, Lillian, and Jaxon. Additional family members who will profoundly miss him are his three siblings, Thomas, Barbara, and Janet, along with many nieces and nephews. His dear friends, Jack Stallings, Brian (Wendy) Pence, and partner in crime Tony, will also deeply miss him.
Visitation will be held from 10-11am on Saturday, May 31st at Redeemer Free Lutheran Church in Ontonagon. Memorial services will begin at 11:00 am, with a small luncheon to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks to make donations to offset any funeral and other expenses; an account has been set up through his daughters venmo: @Christa-Madgwick.
Larry's family would like to thank all those that have been involved throughout his cancer journey. We will all will miss him tremendously.
