Larry Nelson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Chapel Hill Mortuary & Memorial Gardens - Cedar Hill on Mar. 21, 2025.
Larry A. Nelson, a wonderful husband, loving father, and proud Vietnam veteran, passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 15, 2025.
Larry was born on September 14, 1947, and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, before falling in love with his future best friend and wife, Sue, whom he married in 1966.
Larry was a hardworking man with an incredible work ethic. He first honored his duty to his country, serving as a Combat Engineer in the United States Army.
By trade, Larry was a Millwright, dedicating many years of service to U.S. Steel. His skilled hands and passion for street rods led him to rebuild and re-live many muscle cars and trucks from his youth. His final project was a black 1940 "Fordy" Ford with a 383 Chevy engine. He cared for every detail. In retirement, he and his life partner, Sue, traveled the countryside, enjoying the white sands of Panama City Beach and exploring national parks, most often returning to Yellowstone.
Beyond his work, Larry was a steadfast family man, never missing an opportunity to serve his loved ones. He was a loving husband and dad, he was also a great listener. He had a sharp but dry sense of humor, often stating something so obvious, that he would make those around him laugh. He was incredibly generous with his time and skills, often helping family, friends, and neighbors. He was a loyal friend to many and he also had a deep appreciation for nature and God's creatures.
Larry leaves behind his devoted wife, Susan Nelson; beloved children, Timothy Nelson and Amy Michelle Windhauser; and cherished grandchildren, Kaitlynn Nelson, Matthew Windhauser, and Ryan Windhauser. He is also survived by his dear daughter-in-law, Robyn Nelson, and supportive former son-in-law, Tom Windhauser.
He is survived by his brother, Bobby (Leah) Dyson; sisters, Pammy Maesson (late husband, Stew) and Deborah McCance. He was preceded in death by his mother, Laverne Dyson; stepfather, William (Bill) Dyson; brother, William (Billy) Dyson; and cousin and friend, John Layton. He was also preceded in death by his loving in-laws, Melba and Charlie Baker.
A memorial for Larry will be held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Cedar Hill, Missouri, on Monday, March 24, 2025. Private family visitation will begin at 9:00 AM, friends are welcome to join the family at 10:00 AM before the funeral service at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest with full military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, 2400 Sheridan Rd, St. Louis, MO, at 12:30 PM.
