Laura Lynn Kavan Bailor, known affectionately as Laura to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025, in Huntsville, Alabama. Born on March 24, 1962, in Omaha, Nebraska, Laura's life was a testament to her loving, friendly, and courageous spirit.
Laura's early years were spent in the heart of Omaha, where she was raised by her father, Art Kavan, and her mother, Sandy Sellers. Her stepmother, Sandra Kavan, also played a significant role in her upbringing. Laura's family was a cornerstone of her life, and she cherished the bonds she shared with them. She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her devoted brother, Jeff Kavan and his wife Michale of Omaha, Nebraska, as well as her stepbrothers, Steve and Mark Hartigan.
Laura's legacy continues through her loving daughters, Ashley Bailor-Schwab and her husband Chris of Huntsville, Alabama, and Alysha Owen and her husband Kevin of Omaha, Nebraska. Her grandsons, David and Kaleb Owen, Michael and James Schwab, will carry forward the memories of their grandmother's warmth and kindness. Laura's life was enriched by the presence of many friends, co-workers, and clients who became an extended family to her over the years.
Professionally, Laura dedicated many years of service as an RTW at the Glenwood Resource Center, where she also advocated for her colleagues as a Union Steward with AFSCME local 2991. Her passion for helping others led her to pursue further education, and she graduated with her LPN from Hamilton. Afterward, Laura moved to Huntsville, Alabama, where she began working for Ability Plus Inc., specializing in caring for individuals with Prader-Willi Syndrome. She retired in 2023, leaving behind a legacy of compassion and professionalism.
Laura's interests were a reflection of her vibrant personality. She found solace and strength in her dog, Hope, who appeared during a thunderstorm amidst Laura's battle with breast cancer. Hope's arrival marked a turning point in Laura's fight, and with the love and support she received, Laura triumphed over the disease, remaining cancer-free for 12 years. Laura's fascination with fairies was evident in her extensive collection of puzzles, figurines, and even a fairy-themed coffee table. She delighted in attending Renaissance fairs and immersing herself in Renaissance novels. The beach was Laura's sanctuary, where the ocean's embrace in places like Alabama's Gulf Shores, Florida, and Hawaii brought her unparalleled joy.
Laura was a fierce and loyal friend, whose absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, friendship, and courage. Today, we celebrate Laura Lynn Kavan Bailor, a remarkable woman whose spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. Her memory will forever be cherished in the hearts of those she touched.
