Lillian Hawthorne, 96, Monroe, Wisconsin, died from complications of dementia on July 10, 2025 at Dimensions Living (formerly Azura Memory Care), Monroe. Lillian was born on January 13, 1929, the second daughter of Fred and Martha (Jegerlehner) Stettler. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1947. In 1950, she married Alden J. Hawthorne. She and Al purchased the Waffle Shop restaurant on the square in Monroe in 1952, and in 1959 they purchased the Swiss Wheel Supper Club. Lillian and Al had one son, Jeffrey Hawthorne, born in 1957. Lillian worked for Moore Business Forms for 23 years, retiring in 1990.
Lillian was very proud of her Swiss Heritage, had dual citizenship, and visited Switzerland more than 20 times. She also traveled throughout Europe as well as China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. She enjoyed volunteering at the National Historic Cheesemaking Center. She loved going to Turner Hall to socialize and dance. She also loved dressing up and looked forward to her weekly visits to the beauty shop. She doted on her cats, Cheesler and Lucy.
Lillian was preceded in death by her former husband, her son, and her sister, Wanda Kopp. She is survived by her niece, Nancy Kopp, of Madison; her cousins, Ralph Jegerlehner, Doris Ulmen, and Jacob Brunner of Monroe, Linda Corners of Baggs, Wyoming; and by her cousins in Switzerland and Germany.
There will be no service. Anyone wishing to remember Lillian may want to consider a donation to Turner Hall, the Green County Humane Society, or Green County Nutrition Program. The NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, Monroe, is assisting the family. Condolences may be shared at www.newcomerfuneralhome.net
Nancy would like to thank Ralph Jegerlehner and Sherry Anderegg for all of the help they gave in Lillian's final years. Also a huge thank you to the staff at Dimensions Living and Heartland Hospice for their wonderful care. They helped Lillian live out her life with dignity.
