Luther (Johnny) Clyde Boyd was born on June 30, 1936, in McAlpin, West Virginia, to Odessa Knox Boyd and J. Richard Boyd.
Luther passed peacefully surrounded by his family on June 25, 2025-just five days shy of his 89th birthday.
A man of quiet strength and deep integrity, Luther dedicated 43 years of his life as a longshoreman with Cooper T. Smith Stevedoring Company (Local ILA Union #3000), where he earned the respect of his peers through hard work and unwavering commitment.
He was a devoted husband to Dorothy P. Boyd for 62 years. Their marriage was a lasting testament to love, faith, and unity.
He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy P. Boyd; his parents, Odessa Knox Boyd and J. Richard Boyd; his brothers, James Boyd, Samuel Boyd, and Wayne Boyd; his sisters, Shirley B. Holland and Joan Tanks; his grandson, Kelian Boyd Sr.; his son-in-law, Melvin Pierre; Brother in Laws Leroy Palmer, Darris Guzman, Jr., John Momon and Sister in Laws Odessa Palmer and Debra Guzman.
He leaves to cherish his memory five children: Eric L. Boyd (Mercedes), Yolanda M. Boyd, Cassandra B. Ebanks, Stephanie B. Pierre, and Darries L. Boyd (Keisha); Nephews whom he raised Derek Givens Jr. and John Seth Momon, his sister, Drema Marks; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends who will dearly miss him.
Luther was a dedicated and faithful Deacon at Greater Liberty Baptist Church in New Orleans, Louisiana. Following Hurricane Katrina, he relocated to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where he placed his membership at Little Zion Baptist Church. Later he then joined the New Home Family Worship Center in Baton Rouge. He enjoyed a rich life filled with hobbies and passions. Luther had a keen interest in collecting antiques and collectibles, appreciating their value and uniqueness. He also loved his New Orleans Saints and many other sports. He enjoyed fishing, bowling and watching golf.
Luther's life was one of quiet service-to his family, friends, church, and community. His kindness, humility, and strength touched all who knew him. Whether through his work, his wisdom, or his steady presence, Luther made a lasting impact that will not be forgotten.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, and quiet strength that continues to live on in those who survive him.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at New Home Family Worship Center, 1616 R.C. Dear Boyd family,

I was deeply saddened to hear of Luther´s passing. Though time and distance may have separated us over the years, the memories of the moments we shared remain close to my heart. He was a truly special person whose kindness and warmth left a lasting impression.

Luther had a heart full of kindness and a sense of humor that could light up even the hardest days. He was always willing to lend a hand, never thinking twice about helping others. Whether it was through his quick wit or quiet generosity, he had a way of making people feel seen and supported.

Please know that our thoughts are with you and your family during this time. We´re holding close the memories of laughter, warmth, and connection he brought into our lives. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

With deepest sympathy,
Manfard and the Sorrell Family
